Yoga Therapy

Yoga is taking on a wider role in modern life; an expansion beyond the Yoga classroom into all areas of our community as a vehicle for wellness, healing and personal transformation.

Yoga therapy approaches health holistically. Yoga therapy promotes the body's own natural healing resources by using methods based on a series of ancient physical and mental yoga techniques. Restoring the proper functioning of different parts of the body can alleviate certain diseases or sets of symptoms; particularly those caused by stress. High blood pressure, low back pain, asthma and diabetes are now well known examples of conditions that can be helped by yoga therapy. Yoga therapy is more effective for medical conditions than general yoga because it tailors the practices to individual needs.

Yoga therapy in its present form is a new discipline, created by the marriage of traditional yoga with modern medicine. It is a specialization of yoga, which tailors yoga practices to the individual needs of people with health problems. It employs simple postural, breathing, relaxation and meditation practices, taking into account medical diagnoses and holistic factors. It emphasizes mind-body integration, extended awareness and the cultivation of a sense of harmony with the rest of life. It is applicable to many chronic conditions and can be used in conjunction with other complementary therapies. Prior experience of yoga is not required.
