There are reports from the Shennogjia Mountains of central China of an unknown wildman, the Yeren.
Descriptions of the Yeren tell us of an ape-man, which stands 5-6 feet tall, is covered in reddish hair, and leaves large footprints. From these descriptions cryptozoologist have formulated two theories to explain the Yeren's true identity: one theory suggests that the Yeren may be a surviving species of Gigantopihecus, a common candidate when concerning unknown hominoids, whereas the other theory suggests it may be a relict population of mainland orangutans, which supposedly went extinct in China during the Pleistocene era.
Recently, tests done on Yeren hair samples have shown that they belong to a creature completely unknown to China. Nonetheless, hair samples alone cannot prove an animals existence. Until a Yeren is brought in, either alive or dead, it will remain one of Asia's many mysterious hominoids.
