Though countless theories have emerged to explain how & why talking boards work, they remain cloaked in a shroud of mystery to this day. Four years in the making, Cryptique is the first talking board designed exclusively for the new millennium. Its unique design was conceived in 1997. The distinctive layout & artwork mirror the talking board's mysterious past. Cryptique emerges from one hundred years of talking board history and is inspired by carvings found on the gravestones of old burial grounds of Salem, Massachusetts and its surrounding areas. These early colonial graveyards display some of the most unique and spiritual artwork of our country's heritage. While various talking boards have depicted suns, moons, mystical symbols, magical beings, and ghostly apparitions, Cryptique draws its inspiration from these early gravestones, adorned with the stone of the crypt, the wood of ancient trees, and the winged skull, a symbol of our own mortality. Through this doorway is revealed a glimpse of our darkest superstitions and deepest fears. Cryptique's tomb-like box beckons the curious to sit a spell and discover these mysterious realms of the unknown.
What better place for Cryptique to call home than the location of one of America's most infamous moments, the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. Salem and its surrounding areas contain some of the world's most beautiful graveyards. The Prussian blue wood-grained background of the board itself was created from photographs of wood found on Old Burial Hill in nearby Marblehead, Massachusetts, final resting place of Wilmott Redd, the only Marblehead citizen to be executed during the hysteria of 1692. The golden letters flicker like the flame from a single lit candle. Gliding across the board is the gravestone-inspired seer, which bears the winged skull, calling us to explore the realms beyond death. The epitaph of the seer reads "Let the Spirit Move You" while messages appear through the window at the tombstone's center.
By removing Cryptique from its tomb and gently placing your hands upon the seer, you allow your imagination to take hold while your skeptical nature loosens its grip. Shunning a disturbing trend of other talking board manufacturers, Cryptique doesn't skimp on the board's size; measurements are 17?" x 11?". This generous surface area allows for uninterrupted sessions. There are no fold lines on Cryptique, so the seer will glide smoothly across the entire board. The board itself is constructed of paper applied to covered 100 point chip board, while the seer consists of a label applied to a specially molded piece of plastic.
