Rune Stones

Like many other forms of Fortune Telling, the origin of Runes is shrouded in mystery. The word Rune is associated with several origins, from several different sources. You have the German word Raunen, which means "To Cut or Carve", the Old Norse word Run which means "Secret" and the Gothic word Runa - meaning "Secret Whisper". Certainly the evidence we have indicates Scandinavian and Germanic routes through links to Norse Mythology.

The god Odin is said to have gained the wisdom of the runes by hanging for 9 days and nights from the Yggdrasill or Tree of Life. According to the legend, 24 Runes called the Futhark were revealed to Odin (the word Futhark originates from the first six characters in any set of Runes F, U, TH, A, R, K).

The Anglo Saxon family of Runes has 28 symbols, whilst the English family which has been traced to the 9th century has as many as 33. Another family that possibly predates the Futhark from Iceland consists of only 16 characters. The similarities between these "Families of Runes" indicate that they may each be later revisions of an older smaller family.

In the 12th Century the Christians tried to suppress the use of Runes. The fact that the Runes were linked to the Germanic alphabet, instead of the Greek and Roman alphabets may have been a key to the Christians dislike of the Runes. Added to this, the folklore surrounding the Runes, which granted them hidden meanings or healing properties must have threatened the developing Christian ideals of the time.

A modern revival in the Runes this century can be (chillingly) traced to the rise in power of the Nazi ideology and occultism in the 1930's. Guido von List, a man born in 1848 devoted his life to Runic Occultism and published a book in 1908 called "Das Geheimnis der Runen" (the Secret of the Runes). This book brought out the theories of Armanism, based upon the Nordic myth of a super race. The book, and von List's teachings in general proved to be compelling material for people like Hitler, Goering and Hess who even became members of his secret Thule Society.

Of course as we all know the Nazi's came to power in 1933. Their basic dogma has very strong roots in von List's theories. They even used his runes as symbols - The Sol or S-Rune became the insignia of the SS, the Tyr or T-Rune became the Hitler Youth, and the Hagal or H-Rune symbolised Nazi racial purity.

The Nazis may have disappeared along with their ideology today, but the basic principals and symbols of their Runes are now used in everyday Runic activity.

Runic Casting

Contrary to popular belief the Runes are not just for Fortune Telling, but can aid us is achieving wholeness. They act as messengers to the gods, goddesses or ancestors to help us with tasks to make our world a better place. In essence the Runes are guides which enrich your environment and your chosen path in life.

It is possible to buy Runes from any New Age shop, though to embody the full power of the Runes you should make them yourself. Your Runes can be made out of Stone; flat pebbles are excellent - they should be of a uniform size and shape, Wood; Birch or Yew are the traditional varieties - you can use twigs, Chipping's or a cut from a branch, or Ceramic (which most commercially available stones are made of) also makes a good base. Try to use paints which use natural pigments when drawing the symbols on the stones. You will need to make 25 Runes in all, 24 with symbols and 1 which is blank.

Once you have made your own runes (or bought a set) you have to attune them to yourself. After this point only you should ever handle the runes. The attunement is also known as a Consecration, the full ceremony is detailed below.

The Consecration

This ancient ritual activate the power within the Runes and attunes them to yourself. This takes place in 4 stages as follows;

Stage 1 - Smudging - The Runes are exposed to smoke of smouldering herbs or incense (Sandalwood incense is the best). This stage exposes the Runes to the Air, symbolic of the Mind.

Stage 2 - Salting - The Runes should be sprinkled in salt, which is symbolic of the Earth and Nature. Sea Salt is best in this case.

Stage 3 - Dousing - The Runes are immerse in spring water. Don't use tap water, as this is full of chemicals. If you don't have a natural stream near you, use bottled mineral water.

Stage 4 - Firing - The Runes should be burned. An unscented candle is useful for this Consecration.

Having Consecrated your Runes, you should find a linen or leather bag to keep them safe in. From now on never let anyone else touch the Runes.

Casting

There are many different ways of casting the Runes. The two most popular ways are detailed below.

1 - Take a piece of white cloth, about 16 inches in diameter and draw three circles, one inside the other. The inner circle represents the Past, the second circle, the Present and the outer circle, the future. You then draw three Runes out of your bag at random, whilst considering the problem or situation you need advice upon, then cast the Runes upon the cloth. The runes will land in different circles, each meaning a different thing.

2 - Draw a circle in the Ground and stand with it. Focus upon the dilemma and draw a Rune, casting it upon the ground. The closer the Rune lands to you the more significant they are in answering.
